Monthly, quarterly or yearly? How to price your gym memberships

Longer plans bring cash upfront and fewer renewals to chase. Here’s a simple way to set the gap between monthly and yearly, and what to sell on top.

Most gyms set prices once, copy the gym down the road, and never look again. A little structure makes a big difference to cash flow and to how many members stay.

Why longer plans help

A member on a yearly plan pays upfront, doesn’t need a renewal reminder for twelve months, and has a reason to keep coming. A member on a monthly plan decides every month whether to stay.

You still need a fair monthly price. If monthly is so expensive that it feels like a punishment, people simply don’t join.

A simple price ladder

Start from your monthly price and give a bigger saving the longer someone commits. For example:

Plan Price Works out per month Saving
Monthly ₹1,500 ₹1,500
Quarterly ₹3,900 ₹1,300 13%
Half-yearly ₹7,200 ₹1,200 20%
Yearly ₹12,000 ₹1,000 33%

These are example numbers. The pattern is what matters: each step should be a saving people notice, and the yearly plan should be the obvious best deal.

Sell extras separately

Personal training, diet consultations and lockers are worth more as separate items than hidden inside a bundle:

  • Members who don’t need them don’t feel they are paying for them.
  • You can see exactly how much each one earns.
  • Trainers can sell PT packs without touching membership prices.

Use the registration fee as your offer

A one-time registration fee of ₹500 to ₹1,000 covers the cost of a new member: the assessment, the induction, the paperwork. It also gives you a clean offer: “No registration fee this week” brings people in without cutting your membership prices.

Make plans for the people you want more of

Student, couple, ladies’ morning batch, corporate: create each as its own plan instead of a discount typed in at the desk. After three months you’ll know which ones actually sell.

Raising prices

Raise prices for new members first. Existing members keep their price until their next renewal, and renewing early becomes a reason to act now. Tell members a month in advance, in a short message.

What to watch

  • Average plan value: what an average sale is worth. It goes up when more people pick longer plans.
  • Most popular plans: if nobody buys half-yearly, drop it.
  • Renewal rate by plan: monthly members usually leave faster. If yours don’t, your monthly price is working.
